Randy’s Adventures at Britpack….. Day 1
Firstly, my apologies that I’m late in telling everyone
that asked about “How it went” etc.
I got back from britpack to 4 full days of emails etc. And
I had already made commitments to people to
complete some copy work.
Plus, as if I didn’t have enough on, I wanted to get some
info out to a few of the people I’d met there AND
finally I had to get my end of a product finished that I
have created in partnership with John Thornhill.
PHEW … it’s been a hectic week!
So anyway – lets talk about Britpack….. where does one
start?
I know the simple and easiest thing to say straight off the
bat is this:
If you get a chance to go to an offline event, or you can
attend next years Britpack (even if it means flying
in)…. whatever … if you see an event that you can
possibly get to ..… GO, GO, GO!!!
Did I emphasise that enough? …. it truly was incredible!
DAY ONE Thursday 4th Oct
I set off from home on Thursday morning, met up with John
Reed in York, and we travelled down together.
Arriving at around 3.30pm, cases into rooms and straight to
the bar…. hehe
But hey – the first people we bumped into were Richard
Butler and Terry Telford… Yeah… before we even
met any ‘unknown to us’ folks, People like us who were
there to learn and mingle …we were chatting to
some of the people who were going to be teaching us ….
Hey let me get something else out straight up front
too…..
Richard and Terry were just the start of a lot, and I mean
a lot of names we met and chatted with over the
next 4 days.
Some we really got to spend quality time with – others were
to be honest just a friendly natter and a quick
drink… but one common theme recurred with every and I
mean EVERY person in attendance.
From millionaires to newbies…. EVERY PERSON at the whole
event for the whole time I was there were
absolutely wonderful, nice and guess what …..
NORMAL people.
Now I realise that you probably won’t be as interested in
hearing about people you’ve never heard of ….
chances are as I write this some of them will crop up. But
just because you haven’t heard of them yet ….
(I’m sure you know what I’m going to say….lol – you
probably will know them soon).
You would probably expect the people you don’t know to be
friendly and nice, good people – the reason I
bring up the whole subject is because something became
apparent very early on….and it was that the (I
don’t like the term – Guru’s) shall we say recognised
names?..
The recognised names – were just the same as everyone
else… yes they were slightly different, in that they
had knowledge and success that many there aspire to… but
as people they were just ordinary people
enjoying the company of other ordinary people.
Or should I say special people enjoying the company of
other special people who hadn’t had their success yet?
SO any way… back to the plot…ha ha
There we were John and I chatting to Richard Butler and
Terry Telford, and we all wandered into the main
bar to see, just casually sitting around…… Jeremy
Gislason, Simon Hodgkinson, John Delavera,
J.P. Schofield and many more……everyone sitting in a
large circle having a drink and a laugh, answering
questions already and generally helping anyone who asked.
The conversations weren’t restricted to IM either – I had
a great chat for ages with Terry and Richard about
conspiracy theories….but hey – that’s another story…
Oh – I must tell you one piece of advice I wrote down
whilst sitting there….. (Laugh)
Sorry – smiling to myself here…
While everyone was accusing Jeremy Gislason of being
Tom Cruises face double…. (and that’s where
the similarity ends… Jeremy must be 6’6″ or
thereabouts…lol) – his smile though…
I swear it’s no wonder nearly everyone called him
Tom after a few drinks (poor guy)….oh yeah -
so I introduced myself to them and mentioned I was a
member of around 6 or more of their sites… to which I
discovered they have even more!!…
And I listened as someone asked about working late hours at
the pc….
These are my first notes of the seminar ….
Simon leaned forward and replied – he had the secret for
maximum energy without stopping at the keyboard and working
right through…. it was …..
Yeah I wrote it down… not sure now which got the bigger
laugh – his secret or me taking written note of it?
But I did tell him I was going to tell you guys…. the
secret is -
To forget boiling the kettle – and Just Eat Coffee Granules
with a quarter teaspoon of sugar to help with
flavour! ….. (pmsl)
I knew I was going to enjoy the next few days….lol
And this was all before we even got to the VIP dinner.
That came later on when more people had arrived… and we
had our own bar with large round tables set up for dinner.
Well that was great … I met so many people with whom I’d
exchanged emails, done business and even were on each
others lists… David Congreave and I knew
each others faces from our Leeds Mastermind
group… and as we were chatting I recognised Andrew Stark,
then Paul Kinder – Paul and I have exchanged emails for
around a year or more even?…
Then suddenly Andy Lawrence came over and
insisted on buying me a Vodka …. (who am I to argue)…
Andy was at the event as a result of me
mentioning to my list about Robert Puddy’s workshops, from
which he and 6 others formed a mastermind
group got their tickets to the event and have met a few
times, developed a product, and have been
guaranteed some great JV’s already … no wonder he was
buying…. and what a great guy too.
Like I said earlier – everyone there were fantastic people
- and all in the same room at the same time, is it
any wonder the mood was super positive and it felt great
being there?
Back to dinner …. the VIP dinner was a brilliant idea of
Robert Puddy’s – after eating he had all the
‘recognised names’ play speed dating around the tables…
Each table had around 20 minutes to quiz each expert on
their various skill sets …. we extracted tips and
useful sites… had questions answered and generally got to
know more about them and who they were…
Naturally I also kept popping out for a cigarette… hey
even if you don’t smoke, find out where smokers
corner is… and be sure to visit.
I think it was in smokers corner that I got to have a
really good chat with Simon Hodgkinson about his
copywriting… an interest we both share. And because it
was something we both are genuinely passionate
about – it was easy to build a rapport with him and get to
know the ‘ordinary guy’ behind the 1.7mil in a
week launch.
The evening after dinner continued in the bar until the
staff closed it – so then a large contingent invaded
the residents bar … This was where we started to whittle
away at the staying power of some….hehe
Some of the late stayers were Soren Jordansen, Simon
Hodgkinson, Jeremy Gislason, Paul Kinder,
Tahir Shah & Matt Garrett (who was to become a great
drinking buddy – and he tried to teach me some
techy stuff – but you know what I’m like…lol)
By 4.45am, we were down to the last few of us and ready for
a couple of hours sleep before breakfast.
Soren Jordansen had started to slur his speech somewhat …
which we did find amusing, his accent was
obviously Danish, as that’s where he’s from. But we
suspect the slur could have been drink related and it
seemed to really draw out the accent.. I can’t fully
remember who else may have been there til the end.
Oh and before anyone asks … yes we did pick up some tips
and a few cards were exchanged also, and
no… I either can’t remember or can’t comment on any
gossip, or embarrassing moments – and I’m using
two reasons for not … 1, I may have had too much vodka to
actually know if it really happened, and
2, Even if I was sure it was said… it may have been said
whilst under the influence and in confidence… so it
shouldn’t be repeated..
And anyway – I bet most can’t remember who said what or
did what… it was a very relaxing and
entertaining evening.
What I would say is that by the time I climbed into bed
just before 5am….. I had already felt justified in
spending or should I say investing in my ticket…. Mr.
Puddy was not going to be getting any complaints
from me … regardless as to how the rest of the event
turned out….
And the main event hadn’t even started yet…..!!

good post Randy!
I’d considered posting some memoried from the weekend on my blog, but realised that I couldn’t be sure which were real memories and which were just too much Guinness…
Hey Randy, I am sooo looking forward to reading the rest of this series. Hoping to find out what I missed in the bits where I needed sleep! Cannot believe how you managed to stay awake almost non-stop for four days. True dedication. Awesome man!
It was great to finally meet ya and I’m looking forward to reading Head Paint in the next week or so. Life has got even more hectic since the seminar. Five, yep five, new projects on the go already! Well, four I suppose, the MI7Alliance Mastermind was already underway but it is going to be very interesting to see how it launches after making so many connnections last week. Seminars are so so useful and it is great to see more Brits getting stuff done together!
Keep taking the vodka!
cheers
Paul
WOW… that was quite hectic, I was overwhelmed just reading about everything you did, I can just imagine how much adrenaline you were faced with. But, it does sound like quite a four day trip.
