Randy's Adventures at Britpack….. Day 3

Randy’s Adventures at Britpack….. Day 3

Randy’s Adventures at Britpack…..Continued…

DAY THREE Saturday 6th Oct

Yet again I was woken by my alarm and had to jump
into the shower to wake myself up!
Thank goodness for power showers …..lol

And off to breakfast again for another Full English
and a few cups of that strong coffee.
I don’t believe I was the chattiest person at breakfast,
Thankfully there were plenty of people there with more
interesting things to say…. I really wish I could remember
everyone’s names – some I would definitely know by sight
but not stand a chance of spelling their names correctly
so I wont try.

9am and off into the seminar we all went, the start of the
official day 2. For those of us who had been here since
Thursday on our day 3 now – it seemed almost as though
we were ‘knew’ so many faces by now.

That actually felt great – to see people and know something
of them, not just a name in an email any longer.

First up was Scott Paton with a talk on podcasting.
To be fair to Scott – he writes great copy, so whenever I saw
him in smokers corner, I tended to steer the conversation to
copywriting….. poor guy must have thought “I flew thousands of
miles across the world to educate people about podcasts, and
these brits keep asking about copy!” …lol

That said his presentation really got people excited….. it was
filled with fascinating facts and figures… and to be honest – If
I wasn’t such a technophobe, I’d be explaining it all to you in
detail…. but hey, I am and It’s still all beyond me.

I will say this though – if it’s something you are thinking of getting
into, look up Scott and grab anything he’s offering!

The downside of it was that over the break everyone who had been
on the ‘evening sessions’ with me suddenly insisted I get a podcast
going of all the subjects we’d discussed (as they proceeded to roll
around holding their guts due to the pains of laughter) – they think
I’d be entertaining …. apparently?!

I don’t think that’s gonna happen til I get a techy moving into my street!

Next up was Sean Anderson, Great presentation, highly amusing guy,
and 3 pages of notes…… And that was just on the stuff I understood…
before he started talking about the latest software and platforms etc.
Which as usual lost me completely!

Hey one big lesson I learned from this whole weekend…..
You don’t necessarily have to know everything…. Just find someone
that does – then outsource!!

Whoa lunch break already, time flies when you’re having fun.
The thing about these seminars is – there isn’t a break really….
It’s not like you wander off and eat food…. well some folk did order
sandwiches, but most just grab a tea or coffee and start networking
with everyone else again.

Back to smokers corner again for me ;) (Hey you meet the best people
there!)
Case in point .. today I had chance to meet up with a few folks that
I chat with in the EPA forum. Namely Graham Cox, a giant of a man
but really friendly, And Sally Neill, what a lovely Scottish lady she is
and again really friendly… and of course Alex Jeffreys and his Mrs.

What can you say about Alex?….. friendly – definitely, but talk about
‘energy filled’ – If you get the chance to meet Alex, I bet you’ll want to
get the drug testing kit out…. He is so full of positive energy, he’s
almost hyper…. in fact it was only after spending more time with
him later in the day that I really appreciated just how excited he is
not only about his own business, but also about helping others.

Oh and I bumped into my drinking buddy Matt…..
He informed me that his sister had rang him……

That’s when I remembered those gorgeous beef and horseradish
sandwiches….. yum.

I was waiting for the rollicking he got – but apparently she said the
guy was a barrel of laughs and she was getting on great with him…
(The world is a strange place…lol)

Anyway – I’m getting ahead of myself … so it’s back into the seminar
for today’s hotseat….

Jacqui & Roy who are part of the IM7 team, put their website up for
annihilation…. and boy they weren’t disappointed!!

I think I would have grabbed a shovel and started digging a hole to
bury myself in…… what brave people..
But hey – it was all good….. By having all the experts comment
(mild statement) on their site and then follow through with questions
about their goals and passions — It ended up being a majorly
productive session for the pair.

It actually redefined what exactly they wanted to do, and how to
go about achieving it…. and in a nutshell — they have changed course
completely!

It’s easy to see with hindsight how they (or anyone) can keep plodding
along thinking you know where you’re heading….. To suddenly realise
that you started off on a few degrees out of sync… which then leads to
a whole different course and direction to that which you started out on.

So I know they were glad to have had so much expert advice. And they
took it exceptionally well and learnt a great deal about what they
really wanted.

Had it been me – there would have been a hole in the carpets and
the floorboards lifted… they’d have been talking to a white hanky sticking
up from the bottomless pit I was trying to dig.

Finally up was Pat Lovell with a talk on SEO ……
Yeah sorry – really sparse notes from me on this… it all went over my head
The guy obviously knew a lot on the subject, and those who were into it
were scribbling like crazy….. I do have some pretty pictures in my notes,
and the words Latent Semantic Indexing – or something like that….

Oh and another pretty picture, I think I have a pyramid and a silo type
structure…… if that helps great – if not Don’t ask me!!! … go to a seminar…lol

The seminar portion of the day finished with another ‘grilling’ or the experts.
This was great as people could ask specific questions, and the guys up there
didn’t hold back.
We got access to info that these guys know, sites resources, and names…
All stored away for future reference ;)
Well come on…. How am I gonna get you to buy a ticket through my affy
link next year – if I tell you all the good stuff …. hehe

So that ended the formal part of the day (if you could call it that… I did cos
I had my blazer on)
Off to change and think about food.

It seemed a few had the same thoughts tonight…. My room mate
John Reed and I, together with another couple of guys headed off
to the Indian restaurant just down the road… only to find when we
got there – it was full to overflowing with Britpack people….

In fact now I think about it – I wonder if Robert Puddy was on an
affiliate commission?? …… LOL

The food was great, and the company too….. in fact it wasn’t long
before we realised how long we’d been there.
John had to shoot off because John Delavera and JP Schoeffel
were having a breakout meeting in one of the hotel rooms.

Turns out he need not have rushed off, as it was long before they
too were at the Indian!

Still it gave me chance to have another chat with Sally, Alex and his wife,
and a glass of wine or two :)

By the time we got back up to the Hotel, it seemed everyone had
decided that tonight was meet & greet night.

I’m not kidding you could hardly move in the hotel bar!
I’ve no idea how many different people I spoke with as the night
progressed…. all I can tell you is that I have pocketfuls of business
cards and met so many really terrific people who are all seriously
building businesses online.

Another prime example was Jerry Holliday…. he was just back from
his honeymoon and brought his new wife with him…..

That was a laugh in itself, Sharon, fearing a bunch of boring
business types, ventured into the crowd apprehensively, only to
discover (as we all had) that everyone there was totally normal, fun
sort of folks, who as well as doing business on the net, also knew how
to have a good laugh and entertain one another.

THEN IT HAPPENED! …. (hum one of those horror movie themes
in your head… like the Jaws theme when the shark strikes)

A Camera Flashed!!!!!

Seriously – a solitary camera made a flash as someone dared to
ask for a picture with one of the experts….. they as if by magic!!!

Dozens of them appeared…..
Now don’t get me wrong – if that floats your boat then great.
Personally – I suppose I’ve been lucky in my life to have met a lot
of people known as celebrities…. so I already know that most of
them are just the same inside as the rest of us…..

So it’s just not my thing – I’ve learnt that many prefer to just have a drink
and shy away from over exposure… (many get that 24/7 and it can be a
nightmare for them.)
I made the decision Not to take a camera…..

I also figured that (and again – just a personal view) – I’m not overly
impressed when I see pictures on websites screaming….
“Look here’s me and celeb A ..and there’s me and celeb B” etc.

Frankly I wasn’t going to bother at all ….

However … One has to ask the question…..

WHO The Fheck is PETE?

It seemed that everyone of these celebs was having a picture
took with Pete…
Look here’s proof...

group

Let’s see – there’s ….
Richard & Jacqui (IM7) and Richard Butler (success coach) to his left….
With PETE in the Centre,,,
And to his right Terry Telford (TerryTV) John Delavera
(JVManager & Turbo) & Tahir Shah (Dreams Not For Sale & Nightmares)…
See All wanting to stand around PETE !!!

Anyway to get away from the flashes I thought I’d wander out to
the smokers area, just outside the main doors…. and as I tiptoed
passed all the Celebrity Experts in order to escape the blinding flashes..

Simon Hodgkinson caught my eye and simply said “Cigarette?”
“Yeah”, I replied and we tiptoed together to make our escape..

Once outside I enjoyed a good chat with Simon and got some great
tips and advice from him, He didn’t seem concerned about Jeremy
(his business partner whom I’m sure you’ve heard of or bought things
from) – The poor guy, who seems such a quiet sort, must have been
mugged with his Tom Cruise lookalike face!!!…lol

Just then Pete (presumably trying to escape all his fans inside)
came out and joined us…..

Simon, not two minutes since, had been telling me how he preferred
to be away from the cameras must have recognised Pete…….

And before you knew what was happening – there I was taking a
picture of Simon with Pete!

Simon & Pete

Well naturally with the whole world seemingly revolving around Pete...
I figured I’d better get a picture too…. and look -
Suddenly even Jerry jumped into the shot
….

Pete Jerry Randy

See – Proof that everyone wants to be seen with Pete ;)

If you’re reading this Pete – thanks for sending me copies, and I hope
you’re feeling better. (Pete has been down with a bug…. must have
been all those bodies trying to get close to him!…..yuk!)

Anyway – on with the night…
The crowds didn’t seem to die down this evening and by 3am most folks
were still up…
Simon layed down the challenge to stay at it til we dropped…. and hey,
I like the guy’s company… plus Matt my drinking buddy was still going
strong, together with Tahir, JP and John D… plus the ladies, Tina
and Sharon (Jerry’s wife) – Alex Jeffreys was still as full of energy as ever..

And on the night went…. by 5am ish we saw a dramatic fall in numbers
Sally and Alex’s wife retired, along with many more, but there was still
a good few drinking …..

That said there were still plenty drinking, and the lovely JP Schoeffel
ordered a massive plate of sandwiches that he then shared with all
present… hey we were so peckish (or was it the alcohol?) – we even
ate the slices of cucumber and shredded carrot from the side or the
platter… hehe

At 6am I did wonder about Simons challenge – as he was now knocking
back quadruples… and then what ever you call 7 shots in one glass….
That man can hold his drink !

6.30am – I finished my last vodka and got a round in…. I’ve got to be honest
I cheated…. I told the poor barman to make mine a coke!….. Hey Breakfast
was in about an hour!!

By then I think….. (yeah don’t ask me to be sure)
There was Alex Jeffreys, Simon Hodgkinson, Tina Lingdren, Matt Garret,
Tahir Shah and maybe a couple of other left..

And I must apologise to the poor suffering barman who apparently get
paid on a swings & roundabouts scale…..
Meaning he is paid til 2am regardless what time he finishes ???

So he benefits when everyone is done drinking by 12 with an extra
couple of hours pay….. but loses out if he works past 2am….
Poor Sod…. I bet he’d like to re-negotiate for next time we go there!

Anyway – Come 7am… I had had enough… I went to my room and
jumped into the shower…. 20 minutes later I was down for breakfast
to find Simon still propping the bar up!

He didn’t join us for breakfast – and I don’t recall seeing him for the
rest of the day….
But hey … What a night!

And that was the End of Day Three….

To Be Continued……..

Here’s hoping you’re
Loving Life, Living it with Passion, And Passing it on!

Til next time

    I hope you do Keith….

It was a great experience :)
I’m sure it was just enthusiasm and the excitment of meeting everyone in the flesh that kept me going, I was amazed at how my body coped with the lack of sleep…. LOL

  3. Pete Lauder says:

Thanks for taking me back down memory lane Randy…

The whole weekend was like surreal networking, with friends, at a great big party, in a lively bar, in a grand hotel, in a sleepy village, a part of a city that I know exists, but never go there, fueled by drink, aspiration, enthusiasm, inquisitivity and wonder.

The photos of us came out really well, and, don’t worry about the techie bit, just ramble down the phone and your podcasts will be a big hit.

Great to meet you Randy, and see you next year.

    Pete

ps, I’m going to book the hotel for 5 nights next year, to give me some breathing space, before, and after.

  4. Randy Smith says:
